Mini Weddings 🩷 Celebrant 🩷 Elopements

Before Midnight

This is the latest sequel to my two all time favourite films: Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.

Of course My Darling wasn’t going to take me to see it (it isn’t a sci fi or horror)- so I went with my gay best friend! haha We both loved it and thought it was a very true insight into long term relationships. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense and the more I realised how beautiful my relationship with My Darling is and how much I need to value it.

You need to see it! But make sure you rent the first two movies first! Here’s the synopsis:
We meet Celine and Jesse nine years after their last rendezvous, in Before Sunset. Almost two decades have passed since their first encounter on a train bound for Vienna in Before Sunrise, and we now find them in their early forties in Greece. Before the clock strikes midnight, we will again become part of their story.
Director Richard Linklater continues his enchanting tale of a chance meeting between two strangers, bringing to it a nuanced perspective only gained by years lived. As it does in each film in the series, life carries with it new responsibilities and attitudes, forcing the two dreamers to reassess what they want next. Bolstered by an increasingly refined onscreen chemistry between lead actors Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, Before Midnight is a fitting third chapter in one of the great love stories of American independent cinema.

First Dance | Paralympian Nathan Stephens first wedding dance!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jtQ7VuoE2k]

Just beautiful!!

My Darling, being the DJ in the house, is still trying to decide what our first dance will be. He also thinks its acceptable to do an intermediate school social shuffle – you know the one where the girl puts her arms around the boys neck and the boy puts his arms around the girls waist – trying to cop a feel while he’s at it… and they just stand in one spot and awkwardly shuffle side to side?? Bringing back memories for you??!!

Well, Nathan Stephens who practiced dancing with his gorgeous bride for 8 month prior – using really uncomfortable prosthetic legs – cracked me up in the interview I watched of them – he said if he can do it – there’s no excuse for all guys out there to man up and do a proper dance! Too right!!

Same sex marriage serenaded by the Voice crooner Harrison Craig

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md_UTpQVcTU]

The big day is finally here for New Zealand and alot of same sex couples who want to make their union official.

The NZ Herald sums all the excitement that took place yesterday including this wedding where gorgeous little crooner Harrison Craig (who won the Voice Australia competition this year) serenaded them in – check out the video. I wonder if he’s available for my wedding?!

It could have been any other wedding, except for a few variations like “I now pronounce you wife and wife” and cheers of “hip-hip, gay” at the reception.

But Tash Vitali and Mel Ray made history when they tied the knot today, becoming among the first same-sex couples in New Zealand to be legally married.

Their marriage licence was picked up from the Department of Internal Affairs the minute it opened at 8.30am and was whisked up to the Auckland Unitary Church in Ponsonby by motorbike.

The congregation cheered as it was brought into the church as Reverend Dr Matt Tittle conducted the ceremony.

“I am honoured to pronounce you wife and wife,” said Dr Tittle.

“You may now each kiss your bride.”

Speaking outside, he said he was honoured to preside over the wedding.

“It’s history in the making and hopefully it will help other countries to do the same and help New Zealanders to realise that everyone has worth and dignity no matter who they love.”

Tash Vitali said she was “so excited” and proud to be among the first gay couples to marry in New Zealand.

“It feels pretty cool. It’s overwhelming. This must be what famous people feel like with all these cameras in your face.”

Labour Party MP Louisa Wall, whose bill to legalise same-sex marriage was passed into law in April, said today’s ceremony was what all her hard work had been about.

“Up until this point in time it’s all been theoretical, debating about what this might mean, and I think today we’ve seen exactly what it’s all about: celebration of family, friends, commitment and love.”

But there was still much to do to get equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community, she said.

“There’s been a philosophical analysis about this being about Western liberalism and not about universal human rights for all human beings. And I think the push back from countries like Russia really needs to be challenged globally.”

The couple rode to Auckland waterfront on a horse-drawn carriage where the reception kicked off at the Cloud on Queens Wharf, hosted by Auckland drag queen Miss Ribena.

“I’ve been on the gay scene for 22 years so for this day to come at last is just fabulous,” Miss Ribena said.

A few people arrived at the Department of Internal Affairs in downtown Auckland this morning to pick up their marriage licences.

An Australian couple who wanted to be identified only as Sarah and Emma, in their 20s, cheered and clapped as they were given their papers.

The pair, who will marry in Auckland this afternoon, said they could not speak to media until after that, as an Australian television show was covering their big day.

However, Emma said it was a wonderful acknowledgment of the gay community to be able to marry.

“It’s nice to be attached to something very special,” she said.

Another couple, from the US, were the first gay couple married in the department offices at 9am.

They declined to be interviewed, but said it was a privilege to be able to get married in another country.

“We just found this to be our best option…I never thought we would be here in New Zealand, but it’s nice.”

Sky Wedding

Thousands of feet up in the air, Auckland couple Lynley Bendall and Ally Wanikau became one of the first same sex couples in New Zealand to be legally wed this morning.

The couple exchanged pounamu necklaces instead of rings after pledging their commitment and love for one another in front of their family, friends and swathe of media on board an Air New Zealand flight from Queenstown.

Cheers, applause and whistles erupted as the celebrant, Kim Jewel Elliot, proclaimed: “You are married!”. The champagne then started flowing and stewardesses handed out canapes.

Modern Family star and marriage equality advocate Jesse Tyler Fergusson, who also recently married, was a guest at the ceremony and toasted the newlyweds at the reception in a hangar at Auckland Airport.

Ms Bendall said the whole morning had been “overwhelming” but was clearly extremely pleased to finally be able to marry her partner of 14 years.

“It’s the fact we’re finally equal,” she said.

After cutting their rainbow cake and tossing their bouquets from a ladder next to the black plane, Ms Bendall and Ms Wanikau celebrated with their loved ones. As part of Air NZ’s wedding package, the couple will have their honeymoon in Palm Springs.

The couple won the Love is in the Air competition after their three young children made a video about why their wanted their mums to be married.

Rotorua Museum plays a part

On the first day that same sex couples can legally get married in New Zealand, Rotorua Museum has been part of a history-making event, with two couples tying the knot there this morning.

The couples, Rachel Briscoe and Jess Ivess, from the Bay of Islands, and Richard Rawstorn and Richard Andrew, from Christchurch, won a competition run by The Edge radio station to win their `all-expenses paid’ wedding, which was broadcast live on both national TV and radio.

The couples were in Rotorua for over a week prior to their nuptials, planning their weddings, hosting their hen and stag dos and enjoying some of the region’s activities and attractions. The Museum was the venue for both the ceremony and the wedding breakfast.

“The couples have become quite the celebrities,” said Rotorua Museum sales and marketing manager Joanna Doherty.

“They were at the museum for a full day last week doing a commercial photo shoot and we have had significant interest from media both in New Zealand and overseas.

“The museum looked absolutely stunning. The outside was lit up in rainbow colours the night before, inside the venue were dashes of blue light on the walls, and pink on the sculptures, to match the colour themes chosen by the couples.”

The atmosphere at the museum was amazing with guests and onlookers giving a rousing cheer as the formal nuptials were completed and again when the legal documentation arrived for signing.

A TV documentary will be screening on TV2`s 20/20 programme on Thursday following both couples and capturing the excitement of the competition, the planning, and finally the ceremony.

How many bridesmaids is too many?

bridesmaids

We’re not having a ‘bridal party’ – we’re going for something a little less formal so we’ve decided to ask special people to help us with key parts of the day. The only traditional party we’ll have is little flower girls – there won’t be any flowers – they’ll be blowing bubbles so I guess we can call them bubble girls!

And of course – our gorgeous doggie will be the ring bearer – complete with tutu!! haha (My Darling is not happy about the tutu part at all!!)

I came across this photo yesterday and just thought it was crazy. Some people think 10 is acceptable, but this photo is about double that. There seems to be alot of debate around it on google which I thought was funny for a quick read. They talk about the bridal party taking up the entire wedding party numbers, the cost of wardrobe, flowers and favours for them all plus having an equal amount of groomsmen so it looks balanced! I didn’t think weddings were supposed to be such strategic missions! But they do require alot of thought and planning!

What do you think? How many did you have at your wedding?

Wedding vows

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3E9U3GDrmI]

Gosh, I haven’t been online for a little while now – life sort of got in the way! We moved into another new flat (hopefully our last move til we buy our own place!) and we’ve both been super sick – my Darling had a nasty throat infection and this is the third week I’m trying to get over a middle ear infection – one ear is still really sore and I can’t hear out of it. Crazy winter bugs.

The good news is before My Darling and I got sick we did find time to meet a lovely celebrant Christina Venville who will be perfect as long as she can pronounce My Darling’s names correctly! So we’re getting there. She was very helpful and gave us some good advice and some ideas for vows.

Speaking of vows, a friend at work sent me this link saying she hopes it doesn’t happen to us – it’s hilarious!

Bridezilla

futurebridezilla

Good grief. This whole wedding organisation is a bit overwhelming.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sooooo happy My handsome Darling asked me to marry him. And we want to share the day with our family and friends who have supported us through our years of singledom. But even though you approach it with fun and enthusiasm to put your personal touches into it – it is A LOT of work. It’s not just another event, it’s a once in a lifetime spectacular.

My poor Darling has been at the brunt of quite a few polar opposite “discussions” on decisions. Thank god he is so patient. Now I can certainly see how the term “bridezilla” came about even though I’m sure those brides were some of the nicest girls. Before they became immersed in all the minute details that go into the big day extravaganza.

Apparently there was a tv series called Bridezilla. I’m going to have to rent it.

Skinny Love

Skinny Love, Bon Iver

Seeing this song performed on NZ X Factor made me realise I’d totally missed out on a whole lot of cool new music. Listening mainly to dance and GeorgeFM over the last few years and not tuning into bFM or Jools Holland has sort of limited by exposure.

Googling the song I found this chilled homemade video which backs this beautifully sad song well and features surfing by Kelly Slater. (I can’t actually find an original video for it, so I think this is my favourite. Just because Kelly’s in it and he is far cuter than the Bon Iver lead guy.)

A few years ago, what would we have done without google?? You can find everything on here. The album the songs from is titled ‘For Emma, forever ago’. If the lyrics intrigue you there are heaps of forums debating the meaning – but this one is straight from the source it seems. Skinny Love Explained by the English Muse

Check out the other performances; one revivial by Birdy (what sort of a name is that?), and two by X Factor contestants. But not to forget the sublime Ed Sheeran version. Which one is your favourite??

Surprise proposal! On live radio!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIKTG6Y9EKw]

My Darling’s cousin was lucky enough to win $20k. (For having his entire body waxed, go figure).

AND was given a $10k diamond ring to propose to his girlfriend!

It all happened live on an Australian radio show. At least on this Oz radio stunt everyone lives happily ever after!

Check it out, it’s very cute!

How to host an Engagement Party

cocktails3

I guess because it took me and My Darling a long time – a very long time – to find each other, everyone was so excited when we got engaged!

And they kept asking us when we were going to have drinks to celebrate…

so we finally got organised and decided on a cocktail party which we held last weekend (and are still recovering from!). The idea was to make it a memorable event with a bit of sophistication so we hired a mixologist.

The venue was our stylish little townhouse and the bar was our kitchen/breakfast bar. We made sure we had enough generous portions of hors d’oeuvres and dessert which the mums made – yorkshire pudding with roast beef topping, vol au vents with all sorts of tasty fillings, ceviche shots, mini tortilla, muffins for dessert – I’m getting hungry thinking about how yummy they were.

Typically the whole day of the party it rained torrentially and we were never going to fill 50 guests in our lounge, so My Darling cleverly made an outdoor marquee McGuyver style out of tarpaulins. Luckily it stopped raining just in time for the start and our dirty smoker friends were able to go out front and socialise too. So with all that space and a bit of a furniture shuffle we had plenty of room for everyone.

Mark the mixologist from Professional Bar Resources was a big hit – not only because he was mixing cocktails non stop, friendly and professional – but he was pretty easy on the eye. I think my stepsister got his number! We asked everyone to bring a hip flask of their favourite spirit instead of a gift (we have enough stuff we can’t fit into our house already!). Our kitchen looked more well stocked than a professional bar! And we made sure we had all sorts of mixers, fruit, cocktail umbrellas and pretty straws. We did limit the cocktail list to four basic drinks, but the mixologist was happy to experiment with other options.

I wish we had hired wait staff though, me, My Darling and a few helpful friends were trying to heat and serve food as well as wash glasses – so we ended up being quite rushed for the first half of the night. Then we made the mistake of trying to catch up on our cocktails – and most of the night is a blur! When most of the guests had left which may have been around 1am – we both crashed in the worst possible way.

The next day wasn’t any better and I was dreading going downstairs and facing the aftermath carnage. When we eventually crawled out of bed at 3pm – I was amazed! We were lucky enough to have a few housekeeping fairies magically clean the entire area – clearing empties and washing and drying all the dishes. Thanks so much Ruth, Renee, Brett and Kerran xxx. You made my day!!

When I inspected the damage i.e. how much booze we had used – I realised why we were so coma’d – the bar guy hardly used any mixers – just straight alcohol. Lethal.

I think it was a night for everyone to remember – even though me and My Darling can’t!!

So, that’s my recipe for a successful cocktail party.

Here’s an easy yummy cocktail recipe that will transport you to a happy place:

Paradise Bliss
1 1/2 oz coconut rum
1 1/2 oz vodka
2 oz cranberry juice
3 oz pineapple juice
Pour in vodka & rum. Follow with pineapple juice. Top off with cranberry. stir and enjoy! Try Dole’s pineapple-banana juice for a great variation.

The sweetest story

Here’s a really sweet story for you. The wedding you are about to see was one that was very intimate, only the couples’ parents in attendance. After the big question, they started planning a big day. As it got bigger and bigger, they realized the most important thing was just to be married at the end of the day – and that they did. They cancelled their big wedding, and opted for a super romantic, smaller one with big meaning. Lucky for the rest of us, Hoo Films was there to capture it all.
