Bridesmaids | Hen Party How To

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgacDwgKiZg]

So, you’ve been awarded the honour of being a Bridesmaid or Maid of Honour? Then it’s usually your responsibility, or that of a close friend or relative to plan the Hen Party.

We’ve all seen the Hangover and Bridesmaids… these are good examples of what not to do when organising a Hen Party! We do not want the Bride or any of the guests receiving unsightly tattoos on any part of their body. We do not want them dining in back alleys and getting food poisoning… and we certainly do not want to misplace the Bride or cause so much chaos she bans us from the wedding!

I can tell, you’re getting nervous already, it sounds like a lot of pressure doesn’t it? But don’t stress, with the right tips and a little planning the process will be super easy. You’ll create a memorable Hen Party to see the Bride’s single girl heydey out in style, do some girl bonding and celebrate friendship and being lucky in love! And all thanks to you – Hen Party planner extraordinaire – the girls will be giggling for weeks to come!

A Hen Party can also be called a bachelorette party. But don’t confuse it with a kitchen tea which is a ladies afternoon tea with the bride and a chance to meet other female guests in a relaxed atmosphere. There is also the bridal shower or bridesmaids luncheon which is for members of the wedding party only where the bride and bridesmaids exchange small gifts of appreciation.

First thing to do is catch-up with the Bride and find out her thoughts on the Hen Party. It’s a party in honour of her and it’s up to you to fill it with all things special to her!

Set a date a few weeks before the wedding date if you can, this will give everyone time to recover if you’re planning a wild one.

With her help put a list of guests together with phone and email contacts.

If you don’t know everyone attending, it’s important you get a good understanding of personalities and age range. This will help you keep the Hen Party appropriate for everyone. The last thing we want is granny being straddled by a stripper, the party girls from hell getting wasted at a sophisticated wine tasting or the sister-in-law-to-be sitting it out because she can’t play laser strike after her c-section!

You can generally send out ‘save the date’ teasers as soon as you’ve decided the date. Details can follow later with the formal invitation. Email is a great way to do this, you can set up an event on facebook or there are e-invitation websites you can use.

While you’re working on invitations, make some name tags up too – I always think they’re good to put faces to names and get people interacting.

Budget will dictate what the Hen Party consists of. Generally everyone will contribute to the cost and it’s a nice idea for guests to cover the bride’s share. But always get a feel for what guests budgets will allow. Request guests pay you before the big night to avoid you stressing out and having to hassle people.

As for the Hen Party – fantastic ideas are endless! But there are five general categories to consider; DIY, dinners or luncheons, Hen Party weekends, activity based and Stag & Doe Parties.

DIY is still the most popular – this one requires the most time and creativity as it requires high involvement from the party planner who will lead the night format. You can mix and match different scenarios too – in your home, the pub or combined with one of the other categories. Online resources are readily available to give you ideas and set you up for a fun night – whether that be an energetic Amazing Race or a round of bride and groom Q&A. It can be as tame or wild as you want – including drinking games and strippers if that’s your style! But feel free to keep it simple – you don’t have to go over-the-top and give away cute puppies on arrival or gift the bride a trip to Paris!

Dinners and luncheons – it’s always nice to sit down and enjoy delicious food with wonderful company. This is the perfect chance to have indepth conversations with fellow guests and share advice and reminisce with the bride. I’d recommend screening a ‘This is Your Life’ slideshow of the bride and groom –it always makes an impact. On the flipside you can always spice it up by dining at your local cabaret drag show. Cocktail functions fit into this category too and give the girls a great excuse to glam up.

Hen Party weekends – escape from reality for a while and have a complete bonding break with your girls. Remember, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Activity based – I think these are the most fun and act as effective icebreakers. Guests may get the chance to try something new and it’s a great experiential event. Activities range from naughty but nice showcases of lingerie and sex toys. There are lucky in love themed companies who take care of the entertainment, taking the hassle away with interactive games in the comfort of your own home. Add a risqué element with pole fitness, hula hooping, burlesque or belly dancing! For something more chilled there are pamper parties, winery tours and cookery classes. And for the brides who want to go out with a bang – pub crawls karaoke and party buses, including condom covered veils will always be a smash!

Whatever you do – make it fun for everyone. That means providing great entertainment for all the girls, fussing over the Bride and overseeing guests wellbeing. Be the hostess with the mostess and make sure everyone has adequate and safe transport, enough non-alcoholic drinks and food on hand otherwise things can get messy!

We want you to be the Maid of Honour – not dishonour!
Happy Hen Party!

This was the canvas photo of our dog and the ring My Darling used as a prop when he proposed!!

Cute eh??!!

JT is back

I know I’m a little out of touch these days, but today was the first time I saw JTs new song Mirrors.

Not being a huge Justin Timberlake fan I’ve never thought he was ‘bringing sexy back’ – but in this video I thought he was actually looking his best ever.

Plus it is the most beautiful video story. Which I guess are down to the lyrics they say relate to his lovely wife Jessica Biel.

Check it out.

Big Fat Gypsy Wedding Dress

Big fat gypsy wedding

Wow – I got a shock last week when I was doing the rounds delivering my flyers to bridal dress boutiques. I mentioned I had just got engaged and they all told me I should be ordering my dress NOW!!

The wedding is 9 months away (not for any other reason than it may be a New Years Eve wedding!!) – do I really need to start thinking about it this far in advance?

Apparently yes.
One of the stores actually started showcasing gowns while I was there – some of them were just OTTT (over-the-top-tacky). Which reminded me of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.

Click here and take a look at this one from Big Fat American Gypsy Weddings – just hideous, not to forget this one below from the UK series.

Roses are red

valentine's day red roses

Well, I know it’s a bit late, but I just realised I never told you about my special Valentine’s Day!!

I arrived home to a surprise bunch of multi-coloured roses. They were pretty and I was very happy with them… but they did look a bit like the bunches you buy as gas stations!

Then, the next thing I know My Darling is pulling out a huge bunch of carefully assembled red roses which are extraordinary and by far the best flowers I have ever been given!!

I still would’ve been happy with the first bunch, but this was even more special!

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

Hi there!

I missed you!

I’ve been lucky enough to be out of the country for the last week, in Brisbane on training for my exciting new 9-5 job!

My biggest worry was how I’d cope being away from my handsome darling for the first time in one year. Thankfully technology these days allows us to stay close to our loved ones even when we can’t be there in person. Sure, you can’t have a nice big hug or a passionate pash, but you can talk to them face to face anytime of the day or night (which when you’re on NZ time in Brissie means your normal waking time is around 4am or 5am!!).

98 Love Letters was a book I found in the library last week and reminded me of the time before mobile phones and email and all that came with them. Believe it or not this was only 20 years ago. I remember watching sci-fi tv shows when I was a kid, like Space 1999 and they would have these massive clunky telephones with tv screens attached to them where you could actually see the other person you were talking to. It seemed unreal and totally unbelievable. It was tv. Freaky, but now it’s real life – thanks Apple!

Back in the day – letters were the only way to communicate without spending a fortune on overseas phone calls. I still have a whole tea chest full of old letters written by my grandparents who are no longer with me, family and friends, sent to me when I was overseas that I can’t bear to part with.

But, can you even imagine the times before telephone and efficient postal systems?? Hard eh?!

You would have felt so isolated and remote and every word you wanted to convey to your loved one would have been heartfelt. No txt speak or “Laters, babe”.

Here’s another poem from Edgar Allan Poe that was sent to Frances Sargent Osgood in 1845. According to history, even though Poe is known for his tales of mystery and macabre, the two used to exchange romantic poetry via written letter. Read more here, its an interesting story.

Thou wouldst be loved? — then let thy heart

From its present pathway part not;

Being everything which now thou art,

Be nothing which thou art not.

So with the world thy gentle ways,

Thy grace, thy more than beauty,

Shall be an endless theme of praise.

And love a simple duty

P.S: Apparently Channing Tatum recites Edgar Allen Poe to his wife… awwww

P.P.S: absence did make my darlings heart fonder – when I came home last night he had done all these very thoughtful cute things to make me happy!!

Channing Tatum | Sexiest Man Alive

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhQU6MIl3B8]

Ok, let’s get right back to Channing Tatum! I was pleased to see him and my other fave Ryan Gosling on the 2012 best kiss list… that scene with him and Emma Stone from Crazy Stupid Love was very hot!

People magazine voted Channing Sexiest Man alive. And it definitely had something to do with that scene from Magic Mike!!

Apparently his wife said one of the pre-requisites to their marriage was private lap dances!

Here’s his reaction to the award:

“My first thought was, ‘Y’all are messing with me,'” says Tatum, who married actress Jenna Dewan-Tatum in 2009. “I told Jenna after we’d been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they’d gotten skunked.”

Says the actor: “She was like, ‘What?'”

“Yeah, she calls me [the Sexiest Man Alive] now,” he adds. And who can blame her?

Her Alabama-bred heartthrob of a husband is also a sculptor who quotes Edgar Allan Poe, loves to give her massages and can’t wait to start their family. “I’m ready; I think she’s ready,” Tatum, 32, says. “The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we’ll see where we go after that.”

“It’s really easy for us guys to say, ‘I want like 15 kids,'” he continues. “Jenna will be like, ‘Well you better get another wife!'”

Currently training to play an Olympic athlete in next year’s Foxcatcher, Tatum is all heart and muscle at 195 pounds. “I like to be lean. If I get too bulky I can’t move well and I like to move,” he says. “When I’m not training, I get really round and soft.”

Which is just fine by his wife. “People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don’t know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is,” says Dewan-Tatum, 31. “He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get.”

Engagements and finding the right frog

Prince Charming

Well, I was going to write about Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum today…
but I had a nice surprise I have to tell you about.
Logging into Facebook I saw the subtle announcement that a friend had changed her status to ‘ENGAGED’!!!
Always lovely news, but especially lovely as this friend deserves a nice man to look after her.
And she gives all of us single girls hope. Like alot of us out there, it’s taken her a while to find her Prince Charming.
As they say, you have to kiss alot of frogs to find your prince.
But it’s always worth the wait!!
Congratulations girlfriend!!!! xx

Here’s some fun advice for ladies looking for their prince!! haha

Perfect bliss…

mermaids and motorcycles

…is a hammock.

Not just any old hammock, but a handcrafted cotton hammock made in Mexico! That fits 2 people!

My gorgeous man gave me one of these for Christmas. The best present ever!

The sun is finally back again and I’ve been lazily unwinding in my hammock, lulled by soothing breeze and the gentle swaying.

Layered with tropical scented Piz Buin suntan lotion, eyes closed, you can dream you’re anywhere except your backyard…

shaded by a coconut palm at Hauatafu surf resort, Tonga…

cooling down with a Cuba Libre on Guardalava ‘uber’ beach, Cuba…

enjoying a cocktail in a coconut shell at your favourite Fijian resort…

all in the comfort of your hammock…

Perfect bliss.
